Part of Helgoland blown up in 1947

British troops blow up a part of Helgoland with 6, 700 tons of ammunition on the 18th of April in 1947. The Operation Big Bang is the biggest blasting up to that day with conventional methods. The aim was to destroy military facilities, the destruction of the island was accepted. Helgoland was given back to Germany on the 1st of March in 1952
