Helgoland became German again fifty years ago
Undated archive picture of the destroyed lower part of Helgoland shortly before the blasting in April 1947. The British try to destroy Helgoland completely on the 18th of April in 1945. After World War II the population was expelled from the island, while Britain occupied the island for seven years and destroyed it by blastings. The island was given back on the 1st of March in 1952 at midnight, which was celebrated with a ceremony
