Helgoland given back
Official representatives of German authorities with minister president of Schleswig-Holstein Friedrich Wilhelm Lubke, go ashore on Helgoland. Picture from the 1st of March in 1952. A British air raid destroyed the village Helgoland completely on the 18th of April in 1945. After World War II the population was expelled from the island, while Britain occupied the island for seven years and destroyed it by blastings. The island was given back on the 1st of March in 1952 at midnight, which was celebrated with a ceremony. Photo: dpa
