Heligoland after the blasting operation
About 50 correspondents and cameramen of different nations visited island Heligoland on two minesweepers two days after the blasting operation. Picture taken on 20th April 1947. The face of Heligoland did not change much after the enormous blasting. On the left of the picture one can see the break point of the uplands, which was drawn through by 14 kilometres long tunnels and was blown up by 2500 tons of explosive. Thereby a big part of the uperlands broke. 6500 tons of dynamite were used for the explosion. The military installations on the northern tip and the submarine pen was destroyed in this way.
