Invaders of Helgoland have to leave island

The arrival of the Helgoland drivers in Cuxhaven. Picture from January in 1950. Police and British soldiers could get rid of demonstrators on Thursday, the 4th of January in 1950, who refused to leave the island. A British air raid destroyed the village Helgoland completely on the 18th of April in 1945. After World War II the population was expelled from the island, while Britain occupied the island for seven years and destroyed it by blastings. The island was given back on the 1st of March in 1952 at midnight, which was celebrated with a ceremony. Photo: dpa
