Memel Territory annexed by the German Reich in 1939
The police in Memel hands over their batons at Reichsfuhrer of the SS Heinrich Himmler's command on the 24th of March in 1939. Memel Territory, which formerly belonged to East Prussia, had been occupied by French troops after World War I according to the Treaty of Versailles. Lithuania annexed the territory in 1923, from 1926 on the state of emergency came into operation.
