Munich 1972: memorial ceremony at Olympic Stadium
IOC president Avery Brundage (USA) speaks, on 6 September 1972 at the Munich Olympic Stadium, during the memorial ceremony for the victims of the terrorist attack on the Israeli Olympic team during the Summer Olympics. Federal President Dr Gustav Heinemann and NOK president Willi Daume are sitting to his right. Arabian terrorists of the group Black September had attacked the Israeli accommodation in the Olympic village, killed two Israelis and took nine hostages. The rescue operation in the night of 6th September at the military airport Furstenfeldbruck fails. The nine hostages, a Munich police officer, and five terrorists lost their lives.
