Olympic Games 1972: Avery Brundage at memorial ceremony

IOC president Avery Brundage (2nd from right) arrives from the USA at the Munich Olympic Stadium, on 6 September 1972, for the memorial ceremony for the victims of the terrorist attack on the Israeli Olympic team during the Summer Olympics. The Games must go on!, he says during his speech. Arabian terrorists of the group Black September had attacked the Israeli accommodation in the Olympic village, killed two Israelis and took nine hostages. The rescue operation in the night of 6th September at the military airport Furstenfeldbruck fails. The nine hostages, a Munich police officer, and five terrorists lost their lives.
