Olympic Games 1972: Dr Gustav Heinemann speaks
Federal President Dr Gustav Heinemann speaks, on 6 September 1972 at the Munich Olympic Stadium, during the memorial ceremony for the victims of the terrorist attack on the Israeli Olympic team during the Summer Olympics. He is flanked by IOC president Avery Brundage (2nd from right) from the USA and Willi Daume (r), president of the German NOK. Arabian terrorists of the group Black September had attacked the Israeli accommodation in the Olympic village, killed two Israelis and took nine hostages. The rescue operation in the night of 6th September at the military airport Furstenfeldbruck fails. The nine hostages, a Munich police officer, and five terrorists lost their lives. The games were interrupted for 34 hours, extended for one day, and finished
