Olympic Games 1972: mourning - flags at half-mast

Memorial ceremony, on 6 September 1972 at the Munich Olympic Stadium, for the victims of the Arabian terrorist attack on the Israeli Olympic team during the Summer Olympics. The flags of the participating countries, among them the Israeli flag (3rd from left), are at half-mast. The rescue operation in the night of 6th September failed. All nine Israeli hostages, five Arabian terrorists, and a Munich police officer lost their lives during the operation. The games were interrupted for 34 hours. Arabian terrorists of the group Black September had attacked the Israeli accommodation in the Olympic village, killed two Israelis and took nine hostages in the morning of 5th September. Their ultimatum: release of 200 imprisoned Palestinians and free passage with the other hostages
