Peaceful invaders on the island of Helgoland

The invaders, Prince Hubertus von und zu Loewenstein (3rd of left), student Georg von Hatzfeld (with flag) and student Rene Leudesdorff (r) in Cuxhaven. A part of the invaders had spent the night on the ships in the harbour of Cuxhaven to go a shore in the morning and go back to their hometowns. On the 3rd of March in 1951, a protest rally of the inhabitants of Helgoland took place in Cuxhaven, in which more than 1, 000 people participated in. A British air raid destroyed the village Helgoland completely on the 18th of April in 1945. After World War II the population was expelled from the island, while Britain occupied the island for seven years and destroyed it by blastings. The island was given back on the 1st of March in 1952 at midnight, which was celebrated with a ceremony. Photo: dpa
