U.S. soldiers become freemen of a small German town
The mayor of Volkartshain, Reinhold Kempel (centre), stands next to the U.S. soldier William T. Ebert (right), who signs in into the golden book of the town on 21 December 1966. Together with his comrade Kenneth Bakos (not in the picture), he became a freeman of the small Hessian town. With a daring manoeuvre, both were able to avoid the fall of their burning airplane above Volkartshain and so they protected the town from a catastrophe
