US Civil War. Battle of Mobile Bay, Aug. 5, 1864. Richard D. Dunphy, a coal heaver on the USS Hartford, was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, for performing his duties with skill and courage while under heavy fire. The Irish immigrant joined the Navy in 1863, and lost both arms above the elbow in the Battle of Mobile Bay, Aug. 5, 1864. He was stuck by fragment of an artillery shell from the Confederate ironclad CSS Tennessee. After the war, he married, raised a family, and lived to age 62
