US Naval officer Richard Hobson and six sailors under Spanish fire after sinking the USS Merrimac. While attempting to sink a Navy coal ship to block Spanish fleet in the Santiago harbor, they were hampered by Spanish defenders and captured. Hobson became a newspaper hero and served in Congress from 1907-1915 (BSLOC_2017_10_46)
