Mexican American War. Battle of Cerro Gordo, April 12-18, 1847. After losing the battle, Mexican General Santa Anna escaped riding a mule. Escaping capture in great haste, he left his artificial leg behind. It fell into the Fourth Regiment of the Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and is still on display at the Illinois State Military Museum, Springfield, Illinois
