President Harry Truman presents the Legion of Merit to Crown Prince Amir Saud of Saudi Arabia. Feb. 18, 1947. In 1945 President Franklin Roosevelt promised King Abdulaziz Ibn Saud that the U.S. would not support the creation of a Jewish State in Palestine. On May 14, 1948, Truman was the first world leader to recognize the new State of Israel. (CSU_2015_9_807)
