Three women itinerant simplers or herbalists returning home from Covent Garden market to Croyden on the Stockwell Road. In hats, ragged coats and patched skirts, with baskets and walking sticks. Simplers gathered champignons, mushrooms, watercress, dandelions, nettles, feverfew, bitter-sweet, etc. in the country to sell in London.
