The costumes were drawn from tapestries, monumental effigies, illuminated manuscripts and portraits by artists such as Holbein, Hollar, Van Dyck, Lely, etc. Charles and Leopold Martin were the sons of the romantic artist and mezzotint engraver John Martin (1789-1854)
