View of the Old Pharos (Roman lighthouse) at Dover, Kent, next to the Anglo-Saxon St Mary in Castro Church. The Pharos was originally an octagonal tower with eight stepped stages, of which only four survive. A fire at the top served as a beacon to guide ships across the Channel
