Dress of white lace and matching parasol designed by Norman Hartnell worn at a garden party at Bagatelle during the State Visit to Paris of Their Majesties King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, July 1938. Following the death of the Queen's mother, the Countess of Strathmore, shortly before the visit, Hartnell created the white wardrobe for the Queen (black did not seem appropriate for the occasion during the height of summer), causing a sensation among the Parisians.
