German satire
A patient, German Michel - an allegory of the German people - is treated with leeches by a doctor - representing the German National Assembly of 1848. The leeches covering the body represent the German princely houses/dynasties which are sucking the life out of the patient. The last leech (on the patient's forehead) represents the Archduke John of Austria, elected German Imperial regent by the National Assembly on 29 June 1848
