Annual fete of Dr. Barnardo's Homes at The Royal Albert Hall
Scene from the annual celebrations of Dr. Barnardo's Homes in The Royal Albert Hall. An exhibition of the good work of Dr. Barnardo's Homes was given every year in the Albert Hall. Boys are seen here enacting a naval exercise on board a ship with rigging tied down to the stage. Thomas John Barnardo (1845-1905) is a classically Victorian figure - evangelical, entrepreneurial and philanthropic. His crusade to rescue children from the streets was one the best known social interventions in the last half of the nineteenth century
