Anti-Semitic Riot in Kiev, Russia, 1881

Race riots against Jews took place in Southern Russia in the Summer of 1881. The authorites did little to prevent killings and the destruction of Jewish businesses. Many Jews emigrated to America via Liverpool as a result. This engraving shows a Jewish man being beaten by a mob and the Russian soldiers (at left) not intervening
