The Assassination of SS Squad Leader Franz Buerkl, Warsaw, 1943. Illustration showing the assassination of Franz Buerkl, Deputy Governor of Pawiak Prison, Warsaw, 7th September 1943. Buerkl had been tried, in absentia, by the Polish Underground for the murder of several dozen people. The assassination was carried out by a Polish Underground soldier disguised as a street violinist. This drawing was made by Captain Bryan de Grineau, under the direction of an officer of the Polish Underground Army
