Austrian attack on Russian trenches, Carpathians, WW1
A night battle in the snow amidst the pines: the Russian advancing through the Carpathians. An Austrian force attacks the Russian entrenched position in the Carpathian mountains at night, amid the dense pines and deep snow in spring 1915. The battle carried on for days and nights in succession but ended in the defeat of the Austrians, 500 of whom surrendered. Before the Russian trenches can be seen a barbed wire entanglement among tree stumps
