Awaiting declaration of war 1914
A large crowd gathered outside Buckingham Palace at night on Tuesday 28 July 1914. That afternoon, it became known that Britain had issued an ultimatum to Germany and was demanding a reply before midnight. Patriotic demonstrations occurred all over London, including that seen here outside Buckingham Palace, awaiting news of whether Britain would declare war. King George V, Queen Mary, and the Prince of Wales all appeared on the palace balcony
