The Banner Cross murder
Scene as the prisoner, Charles Peace, arrives at the Town Hall, Sheffield. Pictured in the top left corner is Sergeant Robinson, the policeman who captured Peace and top right is Mrs Dyson, who had an affair with Peace. Charles Peace was an infamous cat burglar and murderer who managed to evade arrest for an astonishing twenty years. Over this period Peace killed two policemen and the husband of a Mrs Dyson, with whom he had once had an affair. He was arrested for the attempted murder of a policeman, for which he gave a false name, but he was recognised and charged for all his crimes. With a last bid for freedom, Peace tried to escape by jumping from a train, but was caught and sentenced to death
