Battle Areas - from the woman's point of view, Helen McKie

Impressions of Rheims by Miss Helen McKie. One in a series of sketches, drawn by Bystander artist Helen McKie during a visit to war torn France following the end of the First World War. 1. A big space has been cleared in one part of town hwere huge quantities of irons goods are stored. 2, Newsagent blowing a horn in the deserted streets to let houses know when the papers arrive. 3. Huge numbers of German prisoners are employed in clearing up debris. 4. A familiar sight in Rheims at this time. One the doors of those houses which it was possible to restore, are chalked up instructions to the effect that the house is to be kept, and that the owner is returning or has returned
