Battle of George Square, Glasgow
The battle of George Square, also known as Bloody Friday and Black Friday, was one of the worst riots on the streets of Glasgow. The Scottish TUC and Clyde Workers Committee had called a strike to demand a reduction in working hours. By 31st January numbers had swelled to more than 60000 and clashes broke out between workers and police. Fearing a revolution, the government sent in army troops.
