How a big ship steers: the necessity for a large amount of elbow room. The swing of a great liner - shown by two positions of a vessel. In a vessel of the Titanic class the centre of gravity is calculated at 48 degrees of her length from the stern. This is the pivot on which the ship swings, so that in turning the man at the helm must take into consideration that behind his back there is a lengthy tail that requires a larger area to turn in than the bow before his eyes
