Bridge at North Fremantle, Western Australia

Public works in Western Australia. The bridge across the river Swan at North Fremantle. It has been erected entirely by convict labour, under the administration of his Excellency Governor Hampton. Construction took two years and nine months, and without the advantage of convict labour, it would have been an almost impossible undertaking. Transportation commenced to Western Australia in 1850 and since that time 9246 convicts have been sent to that colony, and with the last ship dispatched towards the end of 1867, transportation to Western Australia has now ceased
