Engraving showing British soldiers carrying planks from Balaklava to their camp through the snow during the Crimean War, 1855. The Land Transport Corps then took over all conveying of supplies for the troops. Early in the war transportration and organisation of supplies was heavily criticised. The mortality of the horses was even greater than that of the soldiers
