Broadmoor criminal asylum - female dormitory

A view of the female dormitory at Broadmoor criminal asylum. Broadmoor opened as an asylum in 1863 to female patients and to male patients the following year. The building was designed by military engineer, Major General Joshua Jebb. Prisoners at this time included Edward Oxford, who shot at Queen Victoria, Captain Johnson, master of the ship, Tory, who slaughtered some of his crew and the young artist Dadds, who cut off his father's head. A report by Dr John Meyer, in 1867, stated that the accommodation was not satisfactory. Alterations were made to improve the sanitary conditions and to rearrange the internal layout for the prisioners
