Bystander cover, Anthony Wilding & Arthur Balfour tennis

The Rt. Hon. Arthur Balfour and Mr Anthony (Tony) Frederick Wilding, four-times Wimbledon tennis champion, pictured as doubles partners in a friendly match on Centre Court at Wimbledon in July 1917 against Messrs. G. A. Caridia and E. R. Clarke who beat them three sets to one. An impromptu match, Balfour had to play in borrowed flannels! Balfour was a keen amateur player and was occasionally coached by Tony Wilding. New Zealand tennis player, Anthony Frederick Wilding was Wimbledon Mens Champion in 1910, 1911, 1912 and 1913. His championship run came to an end in 1914 when he was beaten by Australian, N. E. Brookes in three straight sets. Wilding died near Neuve Chapelle, France on 9 May 1915 while fighting in the Battle of Aubers Ridge
