Bystander cover - The Duchess of Kent at Ascot
The Duchess of Kent, formerly Princess Marina of Greece (1906 - 1968), photographed in two of her hat choices for Royal Ascot 1938 in the Alexandrine style (similar to those favoured by the future Queen Alexandra in the 1870s). On the right, is the hat she wore on the first day, a little black velvet hat, romantically plumed with feathers. On the left, a grey felt hat with a panache of uncurled feathers on one side'. Widely admired for her sense of style, the Bystander says of the Duchess, What the Duchess of Kent wears today, everyone else tries to wear next week; she has the flair for original and beautiful clothes that makes a genuine leader of fashion
