: Caernarvon Castle by Dennis Flanders

Caernarvon Castle by Dennis Flanders

The great Eagle Tower (below) at the west end of the ward at Caernarvon Castle, one of the earliest sections of the existing building. Its walls are 15 feet thick. The town wall joins up with this tower, and the water gate of the castle is situated in its basement. The swing bridge over the river leads directly to the tower. The flags flying on the county offices and Assize Court, left of the castle, indicate that the court was in session when the artist painted the picture. Caernarvon was the setting for the investitures of the Duke of Windsor and King Charles III as Prince of Wales, in 1911 and 1969 respectively. Tradition has it that Edward I presented his son to the Welsh as the first English Prince of Wales at Caernarvon in 1284
