View of Caernarvon Castle, setting for the investiture of the Prince of Wales in 1969. Built on the foundations of a Norman castle to establish the victory of Edward I over the Welsh prince Llewellyn and his brother David. Begun in 1283, the castle was designed as the greatest in a chain of fortress-palaces in the new English principality of Wales, symbolic of English domination. The name Caernarvon comes from the old gaer or fort in Arfon
