The Duke and Duchess of York with Princess Elizabeth at the Cambridge-Abel Smith wedding in Balcombe village church, West Sussex. The celebration of such an exalted wedding in a village church was quite unusual, with three of the bridesmaids being of royal blood. Just five years later, the Duke of York would become George VI, catapulted into the throne following the abdication of his elder brother, Edward VIII
