Captain & Lady Eileen Orde in their Chelsea studio
Captain Cuthbert Julian Orde (1888-1968), artist, pictured at home with his wife Lady Eileen Orde (formerly Lady Eileen Wellesley). Both artists, are pictured in their Chelsea studio at work and with their two daughters, Doonie and Jane. Captain Orde was a WW1 pilot, long-serving secretary of the Royal Automobile Club but first and foremost an artist, best-known for his portrait of Battle of Britain pilots during the Second World War. Lady Eileen Orde, nee Wellesley (1887-1952) was a daughter of the 4th Duke of Wellington and an interesting artist who worked in a number of areas. She produced advertisements for the fashion designer Elspeth Phelps, made wallpaper designs and specialised in fabric painting on dresses and fans
