Christabel Pankhurst defending herself in court 1908

Christabel Pankhurst shown defending the "rush" on the House of Commons and her role in it at Bow Street Magistrate's Court, London. The Sphere describes speeches given by her mother, Emmeline Pankhurst, and Flora Drummond who are also shown in the illustration, as well as comparing Chistabel to Portia, who famously won her defence of Antonio disguised as a man in Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice. Despite this, all three women lost their case; Flora Drummond and Emmeline Pankhurst serving three months in prison and Christabel Pankhurst ten weeks
