Mooto Sami, a coolie interpreter from Madras- a high-caste Indian, hence the turban. Engraving part of a feature in the Illustrated London News on Hill Coolies, brought over from India as a substitute for slave labour following the abolition of slavery. The ILN comments: the wretchedness of of these immigrants was truly distressing. Behind him can be seen coolies near the marketplace in Georgetown where they sat, with nowhere to go, plagued by insects and grabbing what food they could from the market
