Coronation history - The Dymoke Championship

The King's Champion, represented by the Dymoke family, mounted on a charger and entering Westminster Hall during the post-coronation banquet to challenge anyone who would deny the new monarch. The Champion would throw down his gauntlet three times before making obeisance to the Queen. A long-held traditional part of the coronations of British sovereigns, the King's Champion was last seen at the Coronation of King George IV, although the Dymokes did take part, as standard bearers in twentieth century coronations
