Front cover from the Bystander - King Alfonso XIII of Spain
Front cover of The Bystander featuring a pencil sketch of King Alfonso XIII of Spain by Peter Baxendale and autographed by the king. The sketch was taken during 1929, during an informal visit to London. Born posthumously in 1886, he was born king, his mother, Queen Maria Christina acting as regent until 1902. He married Princess Ena of Battenberg in 1906 and together they had six children, although the couple separated after only a few years. Alfonso went into exile in 1931 when the Second Spanish Republic was proclaimed and died in exile in Rome in 1941. A great lover of sports and society, he was a familiar figure on the English society circuit during the 1920s and 30s
