The Czar's Bedroom, SY Livadia, 1880

Engraving of Czar Alexander II's bedroom on his steam yacht Livadia, built at John Elder's shipyard, Govan, in 1880. Extremely lavishly fitted out, this yacht was given a radical design, supposedly based on the shape of a turbot. This flat fish design, 235 foot long, 153 foot wide at it's beamiest and with only 6 foot draught, was very unsuccessful, with passengers complaining of extreme seasickness. The Livadia was broken up in 1927
