Dinner in the Iguanodon model, Crystal Palace, Sydenham

Diners seated in a model of an Iguanodon at Crystal Palace, London. The Iguanodon was a creation of Mr. B. Waterhouse Hawkins who was constructing models of various dinosaurs in his studio at Crystal Palace. The attendees were scientific friends and supporters of the project who were invited to join Hawkins on New Year's Eve, 1853. The ILN keenly describes the invitations;'...such cards!...written on the wing of a Pterodactyle, spread before a most graphic etching of the Iguanodon...'. The eminent Victorian zoologist and palaeontologist, and founder of the Natural History Museum, Richard Owen (1804-1892) can be seen sitting in the head of the model
