Edward Stanley, 17th Earl of Derby (1865 - 1948), director of recruiting for Great Britain in 1915 and Minister of War from 1916-1918. Derby introduced a voluntary recruitment policy called the Derby Scheme, with the emphasis on recruiting workers from the same offices or factories into battalions, known as Pals
