Eighteenth century room display at the V&A Museum

A superbly-displayed section of one of the primary collections in the Victoria and Albert Museum. This room had been built up round the ceiling and mantelpiece of actor David Garrick's dining-room in the Adelphi, in the last half of the eighteenth century. The inset ceiling painting is by Antonio Zucchi. The armchair on the right is of beechwood carved and gilt. It was part of a set of four armchairs and a settee made probably by Samuel Norman from designs by the great Robert Adam. The cabinet of rosewood and satinwood veneer with inlaid decoration and gilt bronze mounts was made for the Duchess of Manchester after design by Robert Adam. The tea urn dates from about the year 1770. Room shown was part of a major rearrangement and curation of the museum's collections in the early 1950s
