Electric telegraph used in the Crimean War, 1854. The plough for laying the wire. The wire is deposited by a subsoil plough in the ground, at a depth sufficient to protect it from ordinary casualties: the wire being coiled round a wheel revolving horizontally, attached to a carriage drawn in advance. The whole apparatus can be worked by the strength of eight men. The carriage and plough depicted here were sketched at Woolwich prior to their being sent to the seat of war
