This is a scene of an eviction at Mayo, Ireland. Widespread evictions of peasants from their homes were common in the mid-nineteenth century in the aftermath of the potatoe famine and lack of other means of earning a living. Here the woman is sitting in the rain with the remains of her possessions tied in bundles. She is homeless and barefoot wearing ragged clothing outside the dwelling she once lived in
