The Ferrer trial in Barcelona
Francisco Ferrer was accused of having taken a leading part in the Barcelona rebellion. The photograph shows Ferrer, top left, listening to evidence during the trial which ended in him being sentenced to death. He was shot after much controversy, at the fortress of Montjuich. Many countries showed their disapproval by holding public demonstrations. Ferrer's daughters addressed a personal appeal to King Alfonso on his behalf
